HIPAA Overview
HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996:
- Mandates standards for electronic data interchange (EDI) and code sets
- Establishes uniform health care identifiers, and seeks protections for the privacy and security of patient data
- Healthcare organizations must comply with the transaction standards within 26 months of the publication of the final rules
- Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) expects most the the final rules to be published by mid-2000. This means that you must be in compliance by mid-2002
